How to Buy Sexy Valentine's Day Lingerie Without Feeling Completely Mortified

Valentine's Day comes around once a year—and if you're planning a romantic evening with your significant other, you might consider picking up a sexy little something-or-other to help set the mood. But if you're not usually a sexy lingerie lover, how do you shop for racy underthings without (1) dying of embarrassment and (2) going overboard?
We enlisted the help of lingerie expert and super-stylist Jenny Altman. Here are her five tips for getting sexy this Valentine's Day—without feeling completely mortified in the process.

aerie-1

1. Confidence is sexy. "There is nothing sexier to wear on Valentine's Day than your confidence," Altman says. "If you feel great in a full back panty rather than a thong, go with a boy brief. If you like your tummy covered, go with a chemise. And if you feel better with a little lift in the cup, try a bra with a little push-up. The gift may be for him, but everything you do you should be for you!"
Try this super-comfy Ella gel-lace push-up bra ($20) and matching lace overlay thong ($12.50, both from Aerie).
2. Be romantic. "This doesn't mean you need to wear pink or red—although, why not?" Altman says. "Try feminine fabrics and girly details like lace and ribbon."

We love this retro-inspired super-soft Holly Bow longline push-up bra ($35) in pale pink.
3. Don't forget that size is important! Buy your right size, says Altman.
"Everyone looks better, thinner, and more confident when wearing the right size. If you need help visualizing how you look in an Aerie bra, check out the Bra Guide, where each bra is featured on a model wearing sizes A through DD."
Here's a pro tip: If your bra isn't fitting perfectly, try going down one band size and up one cup size.
4. Don't be afraid to mix and match. "We are all about having fun for Valentine's Day, so don't think you have to buy a matching set," Altman says. "Change it up with a colorful bra, printed panty, or multicolor chemise."

These sherbet-brights are a perfect match in my book: Drew smooth-stud push-up bra ($25) and these super-comfy wide lace printed cheeky panties ($14.50 for three).
5. It doesn't even have to be lingerie! What if you're just not into lingerie? "Go for cute loungewear that's romantic, fun, and sweet," Altman says. "Simple is always sexy!"
