Huge Health News: All CVS Stores Will Stop Selling Cigarettes and Tobacco

Wow. Today, CVS Caremark announced that it will stop selling tobacco products at every one of its 7,600 CVS stores around the country as of October 1.

 

The drugstore chain has started focusing more on health care over the past few years—adding clinics as it works with doctors and hospitals—and says that providing tobacco products would be out of line with that mission. After all, tobacco is responsible for one in five deaths in the United States and is linked with a slew of different cancers (including lung, larynx, bladder, stomach). Says Larry J. Merlo, president and CEO of CVS Caremark: "We've come to the conclusion that cigarettes have no place in a setting where health care is being delivered."
The move will cost the chain $2 billion in lost revenue, but the retail chain is committed to stomp out smoking and also plans to expand its tobacco cessation offerings (including training staff to counsel people about how to quit). President Obama already publicly backed the chain's bold decision.
