Behind-the-Scenes at This Morning's Emmy Awards Nominations: The Shockers (No New Girl?), the Cheers (Kerry Washington!), and More!

Here we go: It's officially Emmy season! Yours truly was up at the crack of dawn (actually, before dawn...more like middle of the night) to be at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for the unveiling of this year's nominees.

As always, there were surprises, cheers, and unexpected guests:
Best Sport: Neil Patrick Harris
The host of the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards filled in for previously announced co-host, Kate Mara, who couldn't attend due to transportation issues (Her plane had mechanical issues in Santa Fe, New Mexico). Harris joked at the top of the announcement, "Thank you to Kate Mara for getting me out of the house this morning before my kids wake up."
neil-patrick-harris-emmy Biggest Applause: Kerry Washington
Yay, Kerry! Washington's nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama Series on Scandal scored the loudest cheers of the morning for her role as fast-talking, quick-thinking, relationship-challenged Olivia Pope. Which brings me to...
06-best-cannes-dresses-kerry-washington Most Difficult Category to Predict: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Claire Danes, who is nominated once again (and won previously) for Homeland, is joined by Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Robin Wright (House of Cards), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), Connie Britton (Nashville), and Kerry Washington (Scandal). This is Farmiga's, Washington's, and Wright's first Emmy nomination. From what we can tell, this is the hardest category to predict. So many talented women!
Biggest Snub: Monica Potter, Tatiana Maslany, and Shonda Rhimes
My Twitter feed was congested this morning with disappointed fans of Potter's and Maslany's, myself included. Potter, who gave a commanding performance as a cancer-stricken Kristina Braverman on Parenthood this year, and Maslany (who plays like 100 complex roles on Orphan Black) got no love from the Academy, even though both actresses won at the Critics Choice Television Awards last month. The one bright spot for Maslany? At least she's getting honored at the Young Hollywood Awards for Breakthrough performance next month. On the writing side, talk backstage was confusion over the absence of Shonda Rhimes for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for the critically acclaimed and much buzzed-about Scandal. I mean, does the Academy watch that show? How does she come up with half that stuff? I need to have a talk with my fellow Television Academy members.
scandal-cast Biggest Shocker: Betty White's nomination for Host of Off Their Rockers and House of Cards' nine nominations
Even Neil Patrick Harris quipped, "Yes! Betty White jokes [now]!" when the 91-year-old's name was announced. I don't know about you guys, but I sense a future skit in the works. For House of Cards, the media was pleasantly surprised when the Netflix drama series nabbed nine nominations (Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Drama Series, etc.).
Biggest Surprise: No New Girl or Mindy Kaling love
mindy-kaling-cover Aside from the fact that Modern Family's two-time Emmy winner Eric Stonestreet wasn't nominated for his role as Cameron (and all the other Modern Family adults were this year), the biggest surprise was the lack of love for New Girl in the Comedy Series category—and Zooey Deschanel and Mindy Kaling in the Lead Actress category, along with funny man Max Greenfield in the Supporting Actor category. After all, New Girl and The Mindy Project practically stole the show in our TV Awards that you guys voted on.
new-girl-cast Most Interesting Tidbit: Netflix has two shows nominated: House of Cards and Arrested Development. It's the first time a series distributed online has been nominated for an Emmy.
Before I turn the voting over to you guys in our Emmy polls below, here's how the morning unfolded behind-the-scenes at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
3:45 A.M.: Outside the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Getting to North Hollywood has never been so easy. Love this no-traffic thing.
emmy-headquarters 4:30 A.M.: Breakfast done right! Belgian waffles, turkey bacon, lox, fruit, lots of coffee, and more. If only this could be at my house every day.
emmy-breakfast 5 A.M.: After a private rehearsal for Neil and Aaron, the media is allowed to re-enter the auditorium. Might I add that the seats are very comfortable for a midmorning nap too.
emmy-auditorium 5:50 A.M.: Our Emmy packets with every list imaginable to aid the press in their coverage. Kudos to the PR team of PMK*BNC for working all night putting this impressive packet together.
emmy-packet 6 A.M.: Neil Patrick Harris doing post-media press. Afterward I overheard him asking where he could pick up a complete list of nominees. Impressive. He's starting his Emmy-hosting homework early.
OK, guys, I know you've been waiting for's your turn to vote and tell us who you think should win at this year's Emmy awards (to be broadcast Sunday, September 22, live on CBS) and who was the biggest snub.

Adam Levine is on his way to being a married man! The Voice mentor, 33, is officially engaged to Victoria's Secret Angel Behati Prinsloo, a rep for the singer confirms to Us Weekly.
"Adam Levine and his girlfriend Behati Prinsloo are excited to announce they are engaged to be married," the rep told Us. "The couple recently reunited and Adam proposed this weekend in Los Angeles."
PHOTOS: The Voice mentors: Then and now
Levine was previously linked to 21-year-old supermodel Nina Agdal, but the Maroon 5 frontman rekindled his relationship with Namibian model Prinsloo "recently" despite splitting earlier this year, an insider close to the couple tells Us.
"He realized he really does love her and she was the one," the source said. "They are in love."

The pair began dating in May 2012 shortly after the crooner and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Anne Vyalitsyna called it quits on their relationship of two years in April 2012.
Asked about marriage during a sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey on Oprah's Next Chapter last month, Levine admitted that he would like to settle down -- "at some point."

"I want to probably be married at some point," the "Love Somebody" singer said. "I don't feel pressure to get married. I think that when it's time, it's going to be obvious and I'm going to do it and I'm going to really enjoy it."

It's Officially the Summer of Miley Cyrus: Check Out Her Best Looks From the Past Few Months

Just a few weeks ago she showed off her skinny-mini physique in this vintage Versace dress.
She took a walk around NYC in a blue Emilio Pucci jacket and skirt runway pairing.
I absolutely loved this Balmain jumpsuit the singer chose for the Billboard Music Awards.
And she kicked off her spring-summer, solidifying her number one spot on Maxim's Hot 100 list in a Valentino onesie.
As you can see, I've left off many of her crop-top and shorty-short numbers because, let's be honest, just because you have an amazing body doesn't mean you don't have to wear clothes. Anyhoo, here's to you Miley and your fantastic unicorn suit. Can't wait to see what you pull out (and or twerk in) next!

Glee's Cory Monteith Has Died

Vancouver police confirmed the shocking news at a press conference late Saturday night that Glee star Cory Monteith (who played Finn Hudson on the FOX hit show), has passed away at the age of 31.

His publicist, Melissa Kates, released the following statement to USA TODAY:
"We are so saddened to confirm that the reports on the death of Cory Monteith are accurate. We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss."
Cory entered rehab for drug addiction earlier this year and appeared healthy and fit when he made his first public appearance at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball last month. And recently, Glee co-star Matthew Morrison said he'd one day love to sing at Cory and girlfriend Lea Michele's wedding. "[Cory] and Lea make a great couple. They have what it takes to last. I will sing at their wedding," said Morrison.

People is reporting that the actor was out Friday night with friends and returned to his hotel room at Vancouver's Fairmont Pacific Rim alone in the early morning. He died in his room on the 21st floor, having checked in on July 6, and was due to check out today. When he missed his noon check-out, that's when hotel staff went to check. No cause of death has been revealed.
On a personal note, I was with Cory last month at the above mentioned Chrysalis Ball. He wasn't expected to talk to press that evening, but once Lea stopped for a couple interviews, Cory was game as well. He stood off to the side, and yet when I asked if he could speak to Glamour for a few minutes, he was so kind and gladly obliged.
I asked him about bouncing back from life's struggles—noting that none of us get out of this life unscathed. "It's all about perseverance," he told me. "Absolute perseverance. You can always get back up."
Before the interview ended, Cory reached out his hand to thank me and asked my name again. He was as delightful and sweet as anyone I have interviewed, especially given the fact that he wasn't supposed to speak at all.
Lea was at his side throughout the evening, although the couple ducked out before the event concluded. It was widely known throughout the press that whatever struggles Cory had faced, he had a solid relationship with Michele, who has been vocal about supporting her boyfriend of more than a year in the midst of his struggles.

cory-monteith-lea-michele-glee Michele and Monteith's Glee co-star, Mark Salling, tweeted the following tonight, which has already amassed more than 14,000 re-tweets.
UPDATE: Lea Michele's rep issued the following statement, according to Just Jared:
“We ask that everyone kindly respect Lea‘s privacy during this devastating time,” the 26-year-old actress’s rep said.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of Cory's family and friends, Lea Michele, and his entire Glee family. He will be missed greatly.

Halle Berry Is Married: Photos

Halle Berry, Olivier Martinez: Marriage Ceremony in France

                      Olivier Martinez and Halle Berry
Never say never.
Halle Berry is a bride once more.
The expectant Oscar-winner, 46, wed French film star Olivier Martinez, 47, Saturday at the Chateau des Conde in Vallery, France, reports the French website Pure People.

The ceremony took place in a small chateau, where, in accordance with French law, a civil union was held (at 4 p.m.), followed by a religious ceremony at 5:30 at the chapel in the village.

Among the 60 people, mostly close friends, in attendance were the groom's mother Rosemarie and brother Vincent. Dinner was held under an arbor, and there was a fireworks display.

Six years ago the Oscar winner told InStyle, "I will never, never get married again." But four days ago the duo boarded a flight to Paris with Berry's daughter, 5-year-old Nahla.

The pair met in 2010 while co-starring in Dark Tide. Although the movie was a flop, their chemistry has been red-hot ever since their romance spilled off-screen.

"She has called him 'The One,' " says Sophie Dulac, president of the Champs-Elysées Film Festival, which the couple attended together in Martinez's native Paris last month. "She's said she never expected to meet this Frenchman, to fall in love like she has."

"They seem truly in love," Dulac also said. "I've known Olivier very well and have never seen him like this."

The crinkle-eyed Frenchman proposed in early 2012 and presented Berry with an emerald engagement ring by Paris designer Robert Mazlo.

In April, the couple revealed they're expecting their first child together – a boy – early this fall, an unexpected joy Berry has called "the biggest surprise of my life." The baby will join big sister Nahla, Berry's daughter with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubrey.

This marks Berry's third trip down the aisle. She was previously married to baseball player David Justice in the early 1990s and to singer Eric Benét in the early 2000s.

This is a first marriage for Martinez, who previously dated singer Kylie Minogue.

Ashlee Simpson Is Following Her Sister Into the Fashion Business!

Jessica Simpson will probably become the first celebrity to earn $1 billion in annual sales from her clothing line (yes, a BILLION!) So, maybe it was only a matter of time before her sister Ashlee would try and also break into the biz. She just revealed that she's working on her own fashion line!
She told Life & Style that her collection be very different from what her sister is doing.

"I think there's a time and a place for certain outfits, and for me, it's also about comfort and kind of finding your own way with clothes," she said. "Knowing there is a time to mix and match and what mixes and matches [is always important]. It's always good to try, though!"

This Just In: Lindsay Lohan Is Getting a Reality Show On Oprah's OWN Network

The Former Queen of Daytime TV, Oprah, is teaming up with child star-turned-Hollywood-cautionary-tale, Lindsay Lohan, for a sit-down interview and subsequent docu-series once Lohan's stint in rehab ends later on this summer, according to Entertainment Weekly.

After several years of meltdowns, public fights with family members, and less-than-stellar performances in movies such as I Know Who Killed Me and Liz & Dick, it seems that Lohan is hoping that Oprah's magic will rub off on her. The interview is scheduled to tape and air in August, but a specific air date of the docu-series is still unknown—but it will debut sometime in 2014 and will consist of eight episodes that detail her getting her personal and professional life back on track.
This is not the first time Oprah has had famous people sit down on her couch since the OWN network started. Earlier this year, she chatted with disgraced Lance Armstrong, NBA player Jason Collins after he came out, and pop star Rihanna. Only time will tell who—Oprah or Lohan—will benefit most from this partnership.

Iris Van Herpen Couture Fall 2013

Iris Van Herpen Couture Fall 2013

As one of fashion’s most forward thinking designers, Iris van Herpen is always there to push the envelope. Whilst others are churning out ball gowns or cocktail dresses to send down the catwalk, van Herpen uses her runway as a platform for innovation. Utilizing cutting edge processes like 3-D printing to create cocoon like shapes and sculptural forms, van Herpen hammered home ideas about body modification and surgical perfection. Silicone accents echoing the shape of bones, or fanning out in layers of triangular fringe gave the collection its fantastical feel. Even in the typically lavish realm of couture, van Herpen’s designs stand out as a over the top abstractions, destined for a place in groundbreaking editorials and on the pedestals of fashionable museum exhibits.

Blake Jenner and Melissa Benoist definitely have something to sing about! The Glee costars are officially engaged, a source tells Us Weekly.
Reps for both actors declined to comment on the pair's personal lives.

Jenner, 20, plays Ryder Lynn on the hit Fox musical show. The actor and singer earned a spot on the series after besting 13 other contestants on 2012's The Glee Project.
Benoist, 24, joined the cast as newcomer Marley Rose in the fourth season of the show as "the new Rachel Berry."

The pair only recently publicly acknowledged their relationship during a Twitter chat with ET Canada, during which a fan asked Blake if the costars were an item off-screen, to which the shaggy-haired actor replied with a simple "yup" and a smiley face.

Beauty Tips: The 5 Most Underrated Beauty Habits

underrated-beauty-habits A beauty trick doesn't have to be sexy or expensive to have a big impact. Here are five examples of beauty habits I think are totally underrated—do you have any you'd add to this list?
1. Putting on hand lotion before bed.
It's so hard to remember/muster the energy when you're wiped out, but doing this makes SO much more of a difference when it gets to stay on there for a while vs. being rinsed away the next time you wash your hands.
2. Using the cool button on the blow-dryer.
A minute or two of cooler air really does set your blowout and cut down on frizziness. It's amazing! I'd sooner skip frizz serum than this crucial (yet underrated!) step. I can't believe some dryers don't have cold buttons.
3. Filing your nails daily.
I don't know about you, but I never bother unless a nail chips, catches on my clothing, or is annoyingly uneven. But taking a few seconds to file the free edge of the nail each day is one of the best ways to prevent those chips and catches to begin with.
4. Braiding your hair at night.
Forget all the high-tech heat-styling tools in the summer; this old-fashioned method for creating waves gives you sexy texture with so much less work. Plus, braiding your hair before bed kind of makes you feel like you're a character on Downton Abbey.
5. Mixing makeup and moisturizer.
Feeling pasty? Add a couple drops of liquid bronzer to your moisturizer. Want to make your own BB cream? Add some mineral foundation. Can't find tinted moisturizer in the right shade for you? Add liquid foundation to moisturizer. Somehow anything looks better when it's mixed with moisturizer!
