His publicist, Melissa Kates, released the following statement to USA TODAY:
"We are so saddened to confirm that the reports on the death of Cory Monteith are accurate. We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss."Cory entered rehab for drug addiction earlier this year and appeared healthy and fit when he made his first public appearance at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball last month. And recently, Glee co-star Matthew Morrison said he'd one day love to sing at Cory and girlfriend Lea Michele's wedding. "[Cory] and Lea make a great couple. They have what it takes to last. I will sing at their wedding," said Morrison.
People is reporting that the actor was out Friday night with friends and returned to his hotel room at Vancouver's Fairmont Pacific Rim alone in the early morning. He died in his room on the 21st floor, having checked in on July 6, and was due to check out today. When he missed his noon check-out, that's when hotel staff went to check. No cause of death has been revealed.
On a personal note, I was with Cory last month at the above mentioned Chrysalis Ball. He wasn't expected to talk to press that evening, but once Lea stopped for a couple interviews, Cory was game as well. He stood off to the side, and yet when I asked if he could speak to Glamour for a few minutes, he was so kind and gladly obliged.
I asked him about bouncing back from life's struggles—noting that none of us get out of this life unscathed. "It's all about perseverance," he told me. "Absolute perseverance. You can always get back up."
Before the interview ended, Cory reached out his hand to thank me and asked my name again. He was as delightful and sweet as anyone I have interviewed, especially given the fact that he wasn't supposed to speak at all.
Lea was at his side throughout the evening, although the couple ducked out before the event concluded. It was widely known throughout the press that whatever struggles Cory had faced, he had a solid relationship with Michele, who has been vocal about supporting her boyfriend of more than a year in the midst of his struggles.
